AMA congress 2009
Without offering a detailed motivation it has been decided to host the next AMA congress in conjunction with the Southern African Society for Plant Pathologists in January 2009 in the Cape Province, South Africa. The decision was not an easy one but made after consultations with numerous entities and individuals. A first circular will be sent out to members of AMA shortly. The event will also host a training workshop and a General Meeting of AMA to elect a new committee for the next three year term. A call for nominations will be send out later.

We received some funds through a Darwin Initiative project led by Dawid Minter UK. The objective of the Darwin project is towards biodiversity conservation of microfungi - a huge array of organisms covered by the Convention on Biological Diversity [CBD], but currently with no explicit protection anywhere in the world. One of the goals of this project and also the responsibility of AMA, is to building capacity for the conservation of microfungi and their sustainable use. The priority is to training African mycologists and to enhance web-based informational resources for mycology. The biggest portion of the funds received will therefore be used to host a training workshop in association with the congress. A very small portion of the Darwin funds plus the funds gratefully received from the International Mycological Association will be committed towards improving the AMA web page.

Please encouraged mycologists in your region to participate, submit contributions to our newsletter and to invite new members to join.
